Yahoo's Keyword Selector Tool Broken?

Quick question. Is anybody else getting really strange results out of the Keyword Selector Tool at Yahoo? I just did a search for Los Angeles, and apparently all people are searching for are cars. These were the results I got:

Searches done in April 2006
Count Search Term
 350883  toyota los angeles
 333459  honda los angeles
 280591  bmw los angeles
 279022  chevrolet los angeles
 238133  ford los angeles
 226776  mercedes benz los angeles
 181748  nissan los angeles

Either everyone in Los Angeles is buying a new car, which could be, or the inventory tool needs a complete engine rebuild. Just wondering if anyone can shed a little light on this.

Did a quick check on Google based on keyword popularity and here's what this tool gave me as the top variations:

los angeles, los angeles hotels, los angeles ca, los angeles california

That seems to make more sense

I dug a little bit on this, and it shows up for a huge swath of place names - mostly cities, but some counties and states as well. Can't imagine any kind of promotion that'd tweak only Yahoo's numbers this way and for all those different car companies...

Maybe someone's been jackhammering Yahoo with an automated ranking query tool like WebPosition? (I'm looking for some kind of legitimate reason, however farfetched.)

I've recently seen some very odd results too... seems like the "geographic" searches are appearing more and more.

Is this Yahoo's not-so-subtle way of pushing the importance of local/geo targetting? Or, is the tool just broke?

Either way, I've never trusted their numbers. They combine/mash queries together too much for my taste...

I have definatly noticed this and it seems to occur for more than just regionals ads. I searched "wage hour", which applies to human resource managers and the third most common result is spelled wrong.

663 compliance field hour represe3ntative wage

I find it hard to believe that 663 searches were made one this. If this is the case, our country has serious problems.

I Saw "Searches done in January 2007" now! Yahoo! has put it down.

At least some of you are getting results. I've typed in very common words and I'm not getting any results at all. It's not working for me and I'm on the west coast. What's up with it and can anyone suggest another site just as accurate?

I've been going to a bunch of different keyword selector tools and all I get is an "error" or "nothing found".

They have some other options here:

ez-hunt.com

Check all the way to the bottom right under webmaster tools

Yahoo is comming up with a new tool soon, the current tool is not working well and you shouldn't spend time with it.
I have a link here to the google and some other keyword tool options.

Word Tracker is a good tool.

Yahoo's Keyword Selector Tool seems to be outdated, and it's loading really hard.

This tool has been dead for some time now. I can't even get the page to load, yet it is still #1 on Google for "keyword selector". Yahoo doesn't care about keeping it alive. They have too many other problems to deal with.

Yes, it is dead now, but the url redirects to http://sem.smallbusiness.yahoo.com/searchenginemarketing/.

I really liked Yahoo keyword selector tool.
